Chesire Place, Hendersonville, TN Sumner county 5:15-6 pm

Getting home close to 5 pm today and with the sun out, I went in search of photographing the American Tree Sparrow behind our house. I found and photographed two from a distance (photos below), but they moved on the other side of the fence and thicket just below Vietnams Veterans Blvd, so I couldn't follow them. Going around the thicket, I jumped first one American Woodcock, then another, and later a third in this fairly small thicket, and they didn't fly far, but I couldn't relocate them on the ground for a photo, so they may have crossed the fence in their short flights. Hopefully Ebird will come up with an easier way to upload photos soon, as I don't usually load mine onto Picasaweb, and I don't have a Flickr account.

As I was crossing back into my back yard, I heard a Woodcock peent about 50 feet away, in the thin line of trees just behind our property. It didn't come out, but another flew low over me and crossed the treeline, then I heard another call about 100 feet farther down the line, plus at least a couple on the other side of the tree line. I went around the trees and had another low flyover, then a display flight over the large field and then my neighbor's backyard, and as darkness sat in one arced low over my backyard, not much higher than our martin house. There had to be at least 6 different Woodcocks, and likely many more along the large field that I am on one small corner of.

If anyone in Hendersonville wants to do a Woodcock watch in the next couple of nights, let me know. I'll be trying to get a photo.
