The t’s are crossed and the I’s dotted and plans for the the second annual
Wings of Winter birding festival, January 18-20, 2019 in Paris, Tennessee are
all in place.
Last year’s event, despite 6-8 inch snowfalls, was attended by over 100 birders
and over 100 species were recorded. This year’s event will include
pre-festival trips behind-the-gates at Cross Creek NWR and a boat trip from
Paris Landing State Park. Weekend field trips will include behind-the-gates
access at Duck River Unit TNWR, as well as trips to Britton Ford and Big Sandy
Units TNWR, Kentucky Dam, Land Between the Lakes, TVA’s Harmon Creek, Paris
Landing State Park, Forts Heiman and Donelson. Specialty trips on Saturday
will include a Sparrow Stomp and a Winter Big Day. Friday’s dinner will be
highlighted by a talk about Passenger Pigeons by author Joel Greenburg.
Saturday’s dinner speaker will be author/photographer Richard Crossley. Both
speakers will also help lead field trips during the weekend. I know this will
be the weekend before the AOS meeting at Joe Wheeler State Park, but what’s
wrong with bird watching two weekends in a row?
