July 24, 2011 Ensley Bottoms Shelby Co. TN In just a few days the shorebird numbers went from a few hundred to at least somewhere over 2,000. An ambitious immature Cooper's kept the birds up with missed stealth attacks again and again. Lots of molting Semipalmated and Western Sandpipers, tons of Least plus 9 Spotted Sandpipers, 7 Solitary, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs and over a dozen Pectorals made for a lot of scanning while looking for a keeper. We'll see what today brings to the table. Black-necked Stilts, with young of all sizes scattered everywhere and adults giving convincing broken wing displays plus the continuous yapping as you get close to sulking fuzzy balls or teenagers just gaining flight status, are now uncountable. Just 9 species of Wind Wizards but counting. Twenty-eight adult Black-bellied Whistlers plus more photos of the triplet young, lots of Mallards with all aged broods, a YOUNG Blue-winged Teal and a young Wood Duck were worth the effort scanning through the different pools. On TVA Lake 9 young Least Terns some just hatching with others running around chasing arriving adults bearing food. Not much hope for them to reach flight stage but lots of adults around to harass intruders but................Two DC Cormorants have been hanging with the Canada Geese this week. Jeff R.
