Sept. 17, 2008 Ensley Bottoms Shelby Co. TN A two hour trip after work revealed that the north winds had moved all the larger shorebirds to travel south. It seems the Stilts, Lesser yellowlegs and Wilson's Phalarope have left for the coast. Hopefully they will be replaced soon with new recruits. There is still a huge number of peeps to scan but Western and Semipalmated Sandpipers are again at a premium. Still there are rewards, as two juvenile BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS have moved out of the spread fields to the pits where they now strut about in their full glory. David Kirschke reported a GOLDEN-PLOVER and the juvenile plumaged bird was still pacing the flats Wednesday afternoon. A count of 200+ Cattle Egrets going to roost on President's Island is a big increase in numbers and quite a few Great Egrets and immature Little Blues were seen heading to the island. No adult Little Blues or the Tri-colored were seen. A single Forster's, 2 Caspian Terns, and 4 Ring-billed Gulls were seen heading to the Horn Lake roost. Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
