5/12/07 Carroll Co (Obion River bottom area outside McKenzie) I took a quick detour on the way home this morning through the Obion River bottom (known locally as King's Levee) south of McKenzie. I hoped the Willow Flycatchers would be in, and this area has some excellent habitat for Connecticut or Mourning Warblers, as well as Yellow-bellied Flycatcher. While I didn't get any of these latter species, two Willow Flycatchers were tee-d up counter singing in their usual area at the northern edge of the bottom off of Hwy 436. The other usual denizens of this area were quite vocal as well, such as Swainson's Warbler and American Redstarts, and of course numerous Prothonotaries. Cliff Swallows are back at their usual bridge, but I didn't see the Mississippi Kites I see about 50% of the time in the area. With the exception of Tennessee, which I heard several of, migrant warblers were pretty quiet. On the way out to this area, via New Zion Rd off Hwy 79, I passed through numerous fields with corn coming up. Corn is a key ingredient in the Lark Sparrow locations I find, and I've had them sporadically along this route; granted, I don't spent nearly as much time in this area as I do other areas I get them. Sure enough, while enjoying a pair of Summer Tanagers that were perched on a fence, a Lark Sparrow came in just a couple of sections down from them. This is my 3rd spot for them this spring, but I'm yet to hear one sing. Time spent driving around locally in areas with substantial corn will eventually produce Lark Sparrows. Good Birding!!
