I was surprised to hear a single Willow Flycatcher singing this morning (6/10/2010) in a very unexpected spot. I have had them in Lewis County during migration on occasion, but even then I think I have actually heard more Alders than Willows in the spring. This was my first encounter in the presumptive nesting season here. The bird was along Howard Switch Road in south-central Lewis County. The road runs along a ridgeline which slopes off in both directions. The flycatcher was singing in a patch of young successional scrubby saplings at the very head of one of the strongly-sloping hollows leading down from the ridge. The brush includes some sycamores and maples, but did not really look "riparian". I was not able to see the bird, but I heard it sing about a half dozen times, each time trying to convince myself unsuccessfully that it really must be something else. I have not ever lived anywhere that this is a common breeder, so I do not necessarily have a good sense of the full range of the nesting habitat of the species, but this still is not a place I would have looked for it. In other news, two days ago (6/08/2010) I found a pair of Loggerhead Shrikes near the eastern terminus of Newburg Road close to Highway 20 in east-central Lewis County (Amish country, open barrens), my first record of "probable" (by Atlas standards) breeding for this species in the county since I moved here in 2002.
