Jefferson county, 1/1/09
Douglas Lake elevation: 954.4 ft.

We heard about the pond at Wild Pear Estates from a local birder last
winter and found our way over there on New Year's Day. It's located
on the edge of a high-end subdivision about a mile south of Swann's
(I-40) Bridge. We crossed over the interstate from 25/70, turned
left, then right on Arbor Lane to a panoramic overlook of the pond.
Odd to see that many wild waterfowl so close to houses and traffic.
We then drove past the pond to a view of the lake. Later, we circled
back to Baneberry and walked toward Taylor Bend, just in time to
photograph a flight of sandhill cranes dropping down to join a crowd
of great blue herons (photos start at http://www.pbase.com/sylvafoto/
