Jefferson county, 1/1/09 Douglas Lake elevation: 954.4 ft. We heard about the pond at Wild Pear Estates from a local birder last winter and found our way over there on New Year's Day. It's located on the edge of a high-end subdivision about a mile south of Swann's (I-40) Bridge. We crossed over the interstate from 25/70, turned left, then right on Arbor Lane to a panoramic overlook of the pond. Odd to see that many wild waterfowl so close to houses and traffic. We then drove past the pond to a view of the lake. Later, we circled back to Baneberry and walked toward Taylor Bend, just in time to photograph a flight of sandhill cranes dropping down to join a crowd of great blue herons (photos start at http://www.pbase.com/sylvafoto/ image/107701203) Highlights - Wild Pear Pond area : Snow goose Canada goose (ca. 100) Gadwall (10) Green-winged teal (8) Canvasback (4) Redhead Bufflehead (10) Hooded merganser (4) Northern harrier Red-tailed hawk Am. coot (5) Bonaparte's gull (ca.10) Ring-billed gull (300+) Purple finch (5) Taylor Bend: Green-winged teal (28) Hooded merganser (16) Red-br. merganser (5) odd duck - black & white, with black bill, quacking like a mallard image at http://www.pbase.com/sylvafoto/image/107701410 Great blue heron (48) Sandhill crane (15) image at http://www.pbase.com/sylvafoto/image/107701372 Cocke county: On the way home, we saw our first shorebirds of the year - 44 killdeer, foraging with some ring-billed gulls in a muddy pond at Dutch Bottoms.
