Fulvous Whistling Duck is back hanging with the BBWD around the Pits in
Memphis Tennessee again this year for the third consecutive year. I’m
assuming that it’s the same bird.
Most of the Pits are flooded right now and not a whole lot going on
shorebird wise but we had ten species in small numbers. Single Pectoral and
Stilt Sandpiper and Semipalmated Plover, two Dunlin, several dozen White
We did have six Painted Buntings, all except the one at Painted Bunting
corner. (The one flew past over the Pits).
A short stop at O’Neal Lake, Hatchie NWR on the way home produced a
surprise WHIMBREL that popped out of the vegetation where Victor and Jamin
Beachy were stomping for Nelson’s Sparrows (unsuccessfully) and flew out to
a dead tree in the middle of the lake where it perched until after we left.
It might have been waiting for us to leave so it could go back to the
