Below is a list of birds our group banded at Whigg Meadow Bird Banding Station
in Cherokee National Forest, Monroe Co. TN during the 12th year of banding.at
this high elevation clearing. Migration on the Meadow was below average,
perhaps, due to the rather stagnant weather we experienced with no significant
fronts from the North to push birds south. The variety of birds banded waa
also low with only 36 species handled (we average in the mid 40s). The most
exciting captures of the season were 4 Northern Saw-whet Owls. This is the
first season that this species has been captured at the site. Two hatching
year birds were 1st captured on the evening of Sept 9 when and audio lure was
played beside nets erected in the forest near the Meadow. A third owl was
captured during regular day time banding on the Meadow itself on Sept 11. This
bird exhibited juvenile plummage and is believed to be a bird that fledged
locally. A fourth owl was netted during daytime operations on Sept 19. This
4th bird also appeared to have fledged locally.
I would like to thank Hayden Wilson, Eric Soehren and Charlie Muise who
supervised banding activities during periods of my absence. Thanks also to the
many volunteer who took the time to help with setting up and dismantling the
banding station, extracting birds from nets, recording data, operating scales
and hauling equipment. Thanks also for logistical help and for the purchase of
nets and other banding supplies provided by Cherokee National Forest.
