Friday, April 9, 2010 Lake County The first stop was Mud Lake where there were a lot more yellowlegs than yesterday. Numbers now totaled 64 Greater Yellowlegs and 20 Lesser Yellowlegs. Quite a few ducks and coots were still here as well. I arrived at the jct. of Robinson Bayou Rd and Hampton Rd today right after noon and I was amazed at what I saw. At the spot where I had thousands of shorebirds yesterday there was not one single shorebird - not even a Killdeer! The water in the flooded field had dropped out over night and the strong northerly wind was gone and so were the birds! The only birds in the field were a handful of Horned Larks. I did have a few shorebirds on the east side of Robinson Bayou Road on the north side of Hampton Road near the jct. About 12 Greater Yellowlegs, 6 Lesser Yellowlegs, and 41 Pectoral Sandpipers were all that were left from the hordes of birds present yesterday. On further north, on Mooring Rd, I had 2 Loggerhead Shrikes about 1/2 apart. A wet hole on Mooring Rd had 3 Black-necked Stilts and a lone Solitary Sandpiper. Next stop was the Ibis Hole where I found 300+ Ring-billed Gulls plus a large number of ducks consisting of N. Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Blue-winged Teal, Am. Wigeon, Gadwall, and Mallards. The only shorebirds present were 6 Greater Yellowlegs. Just up the road at the Phillipy Pits I had 7 Bald Eagles that were, again, feeding on fish trapped in the receding waters. Also here were my FOS Cattle Egrets (2), 3 Great Egrets, and 12 Great Blue Herons. 8 Pied-billed Grebes were calling and courting out in the open waters. Shorebirds here were 3 Black-necked Stilts, 3 Solitary Sandpipers, 9 Lesser Yellowlegs, and 12 Greater Yellowlegs. A pair of Fish Crows flew over calling continuously. On my way back south I found a flock of 40 American White Pelicans on the west side of the Great River Road at the Lake County/Dyer County line out in a flooded field.
