Ed Schneider and I made it out to Lake Tansi to try for the Western Grebes this
afternoon. We saw both birds within a few minutes of arriving at 1:30pm. They
were out in the middle of the lake off from the marina. They were not real
close, but we got nice views from the marina and the boardwalk on the opposite
side of the lake. We also got to see one of them flying around a little. At
one point we had a Horned Grebe in the scope with a Western for a nice size
comparison. Afterwards we drove around the lake looking for other waterfowl.

Our Tansi tally:
Western Grebe- 2
Pied-billed Grebe- 25
Horned Grebe- 16
Canada Goose- 100
Mallard- 10
Redhead- 8
Ring-necked Duck- 3
Lesser Scaup- 1
Bufflehead- 193
Ruddy Duck- 141
American Coot- 812
Sharp-shinned Hawk- 1
Cooper's Hawk- 1
Ring-billed Gull- 3

We also swung by Lake Hiawatha and found pretty much what Carole Gobert and
Tony King found this morning:
Canada Goose- 4
Gadwall- 35
American Wigeon- 15
Canvasback- 3
Ring-necked Duck- ~1100
Bufflehead- 15

Thanks to everyone for directions and updates on the status of the western
grebes!

Cheers,
Scott Somershoe
