I've had a few interesting birds of note in the last few days in Gibson & Crockett Counties. A Red-brested Nuthatch has been visiting my feeders since early November and continues to do so. I also had a Red-breasted Nuthatch yesterday in Alamo in Crockett County. Today in the Coxville community of Crockett County I had three separate flocks of Snow Geese fly over totaling about 500 birds. There were at least 10 Ross's Geese in the mix. I had a flock of about 200 Cedar Waxwings today just outside of Alamo in Crockett County. Early this morning just down the road from my house in the Mt. Orange community in Gibson County I had a single male Merlin perched on a pole in the fog. Perhaps the strangest bird event occurred last night while feeding my dogs in my back yard. I heard quite clearly a single plaintive call of a Sprague's Pipit overhead! I listened in vain for it to call again and it never did. Was it really a Sprague's or some imitator? I guess I'll never know but I did listen to recorded calls of a Sprague's after I went in the house and there was no doubt that was what it sounded like. Who knows what flies overhead at night that we can't see!
