Feb. 10, 11, 12,- 2012 Memphis - Hatchie - Pickwick - Paris Landing - Reelfoot - Memphis Evidently the birds are shifting north in great numbers making for low to no birds some places and lots of resting birds in others. Twenty-four species of Waterfowl with the best bird a single, male White-winged Scoter. Three species of loons and six species of gulls including an adult Thayer's and two California gulls at different locations, an adult and a second year bird along the TN RV. Lower gull numbers actually made finding the rarer species easier to pick out. Largest concentration of gulls were found in the upper reaches of Big Sandy over a shad kill. Five species of Owls, but only 4 countable as a male Long-eared Owl was found that had tangled with a barded wire fence and lost. Three Warbler species, Pine, Common Yellowthroat and Palm. The Say's Phoebe was still around Oneal Lake at Hatchie on Friday and 3 groups of Western Meadowlarks were seen along the Mississippi River Counties. Eleven species of sparrows with Tree Sparrow and Lincoln's topping the list (I've found more Lincoln's over-wintering this year than ever before). Most of the Lapland Longspurs have moved out as only very small scattered groups were found. Good Birding!!! Jeff R. Wilson / TLBA 6300 Memphis-Arlington Rd.
