This afternoon, a call came through from a woman who said she had a strange bird in her East Memphis yard. She was very concerned because the bird did not appear to be able to fly out of the yard due to a six foot high fence. She didn't live too far, so I asked Carolyn Bullock to go with me to help extract what I assumed was a wounded pigeon from her yard. Imagine our disbelief when we encountered a Chukar strolling around her small garden! When we tried to capture it, the bird flew up on the roof where it remained much to our relief. I called Rob Peeples, the Memphis Curator, to see if I could add a Chukar to my Memphis list and for some strange reason, he advised against it. I must say I'm glad there was a reliable witness with me. Weird!
