May 17-18, 2003 Lauderdale, Dyer and Lake Co. TN There are 70,000 acres flooded in Dyer Co. much more in Lauderdale and somewhat less in Lake Co. There are a lot of carp enjoying playing sexual games in the foot high corn. The Mississippi River rise has hopefully peaked but much of the crop will have to be replanted. The dry March and early April gave way to a very wet late April and May. That plus the heavy late snows in some areas and the Mississippi rose 20 feet in 10 days and has finally started a slow fall. The only good to come of this may well be the habitat that will be present due to this slow fall and the wet areas that will hang around for a little while. In June of 1996 there was water still in the fields and it made for some great birding here in West TN, with 2 different Pacific Loons, seen on the 5th and the 22nd, Anhinga along the levee, adult Tri-colored Herons, White and White-faced Ibis, Yellow Rail, Purple Gallinule, Common Moorhen, CURLEW SANDPIPER and multiple Laughing Gulls, all enjoyed by many. Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
