Jan Shaw joined me this morning for some birding in the Cedar Hill area. My initial hope was to find the three shrikes I've been seeing since November, but they appear to have gone. That's not surprising: they left last year around the same time. But we had a good outing nonetheless. At the first location (the Van Hook farm) we had a flock of 20+ White-crowned Sparrows. A short distance down the road we saw four birds fly up to a fence and were very pleased to see they were Vesper Sparrows. A drive past Wessyngton turned up a huge flock of Turkeys (100+). From there we went to Cedar Hill Swamp where we had about 10 Red-headed Woodpeckers, a couple of Red-shouldered Hawks and, very conservatively, 20+ Rusty Blackbirds turning over leaves in the wet woodlands. At several places along the way we saw groups of Horned Larks and tallied 50 by the time we finished. As has been the case for me all season, we saw no pipits or Savannah Sparrows, both of which have been common in years past.
