Jimi and I visited Big South Fork National River and Recreation Scott and Fentress County, TN) area on Saturday. Though mostly for rest and quiet solitude, I could not help birding some. We saw a VESPER SPARROW just off Hwy 297 in a field. A BROAD-WINGED HAWK had arrived as well as Blue-Headed Vireos; a singing Hermit Thrush- YBSapsucker and a flyover PINE SISKIN were the highlights. YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS were singing along the road descending into the gorge. On the home front here in Jacksboro, we still have 6-9 Purple Finch that have been with us 2 months. A lone Pine Siskin was seen this week also. Eastern Bluebirds have their nest built and it appears ready for the eggs any day now. Blue-Headed Vireos are in, and this am (Sunday) I heard the first Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher in the yard.
