TN-Birders:
The first upgrade of hardware for the Freelist server that distributes the
TN-Birds mailing list will take place this coming Saturday morning starting at
around 9 a.m.
Since this is a somewhat complicated process, you may expect that TN-Birds list
will be out of service for a good part of the day.

We'll be moving to a roomy HP DL585 with 2 Opteron 850's and 2GB RAM. The
server also provides for upgradeability -- two more CPU's and
another 62GB of memory which can be dropped in if ever need.

It's been just over four years since the last hardware upgrade and Freelist
feels their need for it has never been greater.

Since Nov. 2001, Freelist has been running on a custom-built server with 512MB
RAM, two PIII/800 cpu's, and some fairly slow storage. The fact that they've
been able to continue running on such ancient hardware is a testament
to the quality of the Open Source software they so heavily depend on.
Nonetheless, as Freelist has grown, demand for resources has gradually
outstripped the capabilities of their hardware.

So here's the plan: Freelist will be doing the migration on Saturday the 22nd,
starting at about 9am. It's a complicated migration and they do expect there
to
be bumps along the way, but they plan to have everything operational by
mid-afternoon. During that time, of course, FreeLists' services and TN-Birds
net will be unavailable. The rest of the weekend will be available to finding
and
ironing out any remaining problems that crop up.

Any questions or concerns? Please don't hesitate to ask. E-mail me at
wallace@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx There is no need to send messages to TN-Birds
during downtime because obviously the list will not be operational and no
messages can be distributed. We will try to send a message to the list when it
appears we are again up and running.

Let's go birding.....
