Taylor Bend, Jefferson county, 12/17/13, 3-5pm; lake elevation: 953.6' Highest number of Northern Shovelers that we've seen, and a nice flock of Dunlins - most birds were seen about 1 mile south of where we parked on McCorkle Loop. Viewing conditions got worse as the sun dropped and the wind picked up - better to head out here early in the day. There were some smaller ducks in a raft of Mallards and beyond, but i.d. was hindered by harsh backlighting and a quivering scope. Returning, we saw 1000+ gulls, like snowflakes in the air, a couple of miles to the north. -Partial list (Taylor Bend): Northern Shoveler (92) Green-winged Teal (8) Hooded Merganser (2) Great Blue Heron (18) Bald Eagle (2 imm.) Dunlin (28) Ring-billed Gull (75) Bonaparte's Gull (8) Michael Sledjeski & Leslie Gibbens Del Rio TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER==================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
