I finally found an Upland Sandpiper this morning after years of checking an
ideal-looking large pasture area among rolling hills in southern Cumberland
County. I was attracted to the calling overhead (giving the call listed on
Sibley's app as "flight [flush] call_NE" which I'd describe as a fast bubbly
"whip ih dip ih doo"  with varying numbers of notes). Unfortunately I only
saw the bird as it flew around calling about 150 feet overhead for about two
minutes. It seemed to fly back toward me when I played a medley of Upland
Sandpiper recordings, but it soon ignored the recordings and flew over one
of the ridges, not to be found again. This was along Winningham Road near
Shadow Mountain Estates and the UT Grasslands Research Unit.
