Two items of potential interest to birders in the Knoxville-area and beyond. First, TVA has released preliminary plans for land purchased after the ash spill at Kingston Steam Plant including parkland, wetland areas, and "birding trails" (that's a quote) along with soccer and softball fields. Plans call for development to begin soon and continue through 2014 so don't plan on visiting yet. Conversion to dry storage of ash will affect shorebird habitiat here but the proposed wetlands sound interesting. A .pdf file of the yesterday's presentation which includes computer renderings of the proposed development can be found here: http://www.tva.gov/kingston/public_meetings/presentations/Kingston_Restoration_Concepts_final%208-2-11.pdf with additional details on the meeting to be posted here: http://www.tva.gov/kingston/public_meetings/aug2_2011.html Second, those in Knox County may have heard that the county recently sold the county-owned land leased to the mulching company in Solway to that company (with proceeds planned to go toward construction of a new Carter Elementary School) and how... oops... they accidentally included Big Foot Park in the land sold. Few people probably even knew about this park... and, honestly, I knew it was there, have even been there, but didn't know it had a name or was countly land (thought it was TVA property). But, this park at the end of Jim Jones Lane is one of the spots normally covered on the Knoxville Christmas Bird Count and the Knox County Spring and Fall Bird Counts. A few years ago, we had the first Cattle Egret for the Knoxville CBC from this spot. This use got mention in a story today by the Knoxville News-Sentinel... http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2011/aug/03/county-commissioner-critical-of-solway-land-sale/ Dean Edwards Knoxville, TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
