Ralph: There seems to be no end as to what a turkey will do and each experience is a new one, but I have never heard of "turkey circling" before. I also have had turkeys in my yard and I never knew what to expect of them. One strange thing I watched seemed to be an involuntary dance. They all would be pecking around quite normal then suddenly one would jump like a spark of electricity had hit it and then like a maniac it would jerk sideways then jump straight up and down and start a run with it's neck sticking out. When it stopped it seemed to wonder what in the world happened. During that dance a few others caught the fever and ran around with their heads down, flapping their wings--- having no idea what was causing themselves to move. They seem to be possessed by something. As I can se no spurs on them, I take them to be females. There is a small beard on each bird, and some are doing a minor version of a male display, so I hope I do not need more Turkey SexEd. The odd thing is, they have been taking to running in circles, literally. Sometimes several will form a ring and simply run in circles for several minutes. Today three lined up around a tree and proceeded to circle it rapidly for minutes, one with its tail slightly expanded and tilted towards the tree. Thery are also quite agressive with crows. They will stand beneath a tree with a crow perched in it, and stretch their necks and fluff up. Eventually, one caught a crow on the ground and ran at it, neck extended. One might guess a ground nesting bird (I assume) would be aware of the predatory habits of crows. These dinosaurs are really interesting.
