Nov. 22, 2007 Tunica Co. MS I tried again to plot a raptor survey route and started at 10 AM and finished after covering 88 miles at 5 PM. This area still amazes me when it comes to raptor concentrations. With some help, there is no telling what numbers we can tally with a few adjustments to the route I ran today. At some points you are literally surrounded by raptors. Here is what I came up with today: Red-tailed Hawks - Eastern-Western - Krider's - Dark Morph - Harlan's were seen, total - 113, Red-shouldered -2, Northern Harrier - 52 Rough-legged Hawk - 3 immature light morph, Cooper's Hawk - 2, Sharp-shinned - 1 and American Kestrel 6. 179 Total - That's an average of a little over 2 birds per mile. One Harlan's that has been coming back now for 6 years to the same tree was back on station as was a dark morph that has returned to the same line of trees now for the 4th year. I also had 9 Loggerhead Shrike, slightly lower number than I would expect but the wind was keeping them off the wires. Also I had 24 American White Pelicans and 5 Long-billed Dowitchers for bonus birds. The geese are in, big time, along with hordes of Lapland Longspurs, Horned Larks and Pipits. Good Birding !!!
