Tn NWR - Duck River Unit Humphreys Co. 8/9/12 2:30-6:30 PM Just another day at the Duck as Cyndi and I returned to see what we missed on Sunday. Sure enough two of the TRI-COLORED HERONS were still present with one hunting close to shore. He was very visible along the Pool 1 bank just past the New Johnsonville Pump Station near rhe large cypress tree in the corner. The other tri-colored heron was across the pond near the grassy landing where American Pelicans and a lone SANDHILL CRANE were distant but very visible. Two other notable surprises included a juvenile American Black Duck prominently perched on a cypress snag. The un-lined blue wing patch seen at close range helped with the ID and a very distant but long look at a juvenile plumaged BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK also perched and preening on a cypress snag. Our digiscope pics don't show this well, but he showed a rufous chest, slightly darker underbelly and some white near the tail feathers as well as a faint eye ring. We enlarged the pics at home on the laptop and compared the basic coloration to better and closer pics of BBWD we took last fall at the Rio Grande Valley. Hopefully, we can get some closer pics this weekend. Large number of Great Egrets (200), Great Blue Herons (100), Double Crested Cormorants (350), Caspian Terns (110) with Forster's mixed in. The Pool 1 shoreline is being drawn down so shorebirds including Solitary, Pectoral and Spotted Sandpipers are showing up. Also hundreds of swallow present. Great chance to view Bank in flight, especially near Pool 3 where the Sedge Wrens are most prominent. Always fun, Steve & Cyndi Routledge Clarksville-Montgomery Co.
