Bill and I observed three (3) Short-eared Owls off of Swamp Road in Rutherford
County tonight. The most we had previously was two (2).
At 514p, we observed the first owl fly up and through the circling eight (8)
Northern Harriers from the tall grass field at Swamp and Little Rock Road. It
flew directly across Swamp. Less than a minute later, the second owl did the
same thing. They flew northwest of Little Rock Road and hunted in the short
grass field in front of the barn and silo. We parked on Little Rock and
watched them hunt until 527p. One bird hunted next to the road for a little
bit giving us killer views! They eventually moved to the far corner. Since it
was light enough, we went back to Swamp and Little Rock to see if there were
any more owls. At 530p, a third owl flew up out of the field. It crossed over
Swamp only to return back and start hunting. We watched it until 533p. It
also came very close to the vehicle giving us very nice views!
