I finally got to see the bands on the 2 WHCR in Bell's Bend, and they are the same birds that spent the winter of 2007 - 2008. This site is just 1 mile from the site where the birds spent the winter of 2007-2008 site and the site the birds used for a couple of days in December 2008. The cranes have been feeding in the corn field immediately to the west of the river. The International Crane Foundation says these birds were at Wheeler NWR for the winter of 2010 - 2011. I've asked them if they know where the birds were for the winters of 2008 - 2009 and 2009 - 2010. Unfortunately, the cranes still have not been seen in an area where the public can view them. The band colors are: Bird #1-04: Left leg = red over green over white Right leg = white over green Bird #8-05: Left leg = green over white over red Right leg = green over white I'll be out there for the CBC. I hope they stay!
