We've been anxiously looking for our first spring Ruby-throated Hummingbird since getting back from the Rio Grande Valley two weeks ago. Even though we knew it was a bit early according to our records of previous years, the warm days and winds from the south raised our expectations. Today lowered the expectations as it is cold with west/northwest winds and intermittent snow. But at 11:00 a.m. a beautiful mature male Ruby-throated showed up at the feeder and happiness skyrocketed at our house. He has been voraciously drinking for the first five minutes so he must have had a battle to get here having to fight those winds and snow. He sure is a welcome sight and we hope he will stay and others will soon follow.
