In yet another sign of our unusually early spring, we just had an impressive termite emergence in the woods here at Beaman Park Nature Center. For a few minutes there were thousands of them flying around. It's too bad there weren't more migrants here to take advantage of the bounty; the termites encountered no feathered predators to speak of. I've had some of my most memorable looks at birds by watching them feast on termites as they take to the air for their nuptial flights. (I remember one day in particular seeing Cape May and Blackburnian Warblers just a few feet off the ground catching these insects as they came out of the ground.) But that was always in late April and May, not March.
