So far eBirders have submitted 841 checklists for Tennessee that cover May, 2011. These encompass 235 species and 13,252 individual birds. Among these reports were a good variety of lingering waterfowl (including Am. Black Duck, Redhead, Greater Scaup, and Bufflehead), multiple Least Bitterns, Tricolored Heron, White-faced Ibis, Northern Goshawk, Purple Gallinule, Common Moorhen (east and west TN), 23 species of shorebirds, 36 species of wood warblers, and Bachman's Sparrow (2nd consecutive month). Details about most of these sightings have appeared here in TN-Birds.

Substantially fewer species were reported to TN-Birds but not to eBird last month -- White Ibis, Baird's Sandpiper (multiple reports), Laughing Gull, and White-winged Dove. These are still mostly (3 of 4) from west TN, and half from Shelby County. Ironically, thanks to the ongoing efforts to enter huge amounts of historical data from the greater Memphis area, Shelby county now has the best eBird coverage for prior decades (some back as far as the 1920s) for anywhere in Tennessee, yet the skimpiest coverage for recent years among the populous counties.
