I know there have been discussions on this forum before about birding
off the television. Thursday while watching the History Channel's
"Alone" (season 3,episode 7) I was able to ID 3 birds with the help of a
Birds of Chile guide. This show features contestants trying to survive
on a Patagonian lake shore. The birds were a perched and flying Chimango
Caracara, a Fire-eyed Diucon, and a Chucao Tapaculo. The latter ID was
confirmed on screen when one guy sadly caught the bird using a bamboo
trap, twisted its neck, and cooked it for a whole 20 calories. Such a
shame as it was really beautiful and supposedly a loud songster. I'm
fairly certain of the other 2 IDs but not 100%. There was a lot of
pausing and squinting involved. I hope this is appropriate for
tn-bird--it was viewed from Tennessee at least. On a more local note I
did get to see the Cades Cove Ross's Goose at the sewage ponds on the
afternoon of Jan. 10.
