Dec. 29, 2009 TVA - Robco Lake Shelby Co. TN Tunica Co. MS Had a few hours to waste after some early morning work, so off to look through gulls in Tunica Co. The reward was a large number of Ring-bills to sort through. Bad lighting with birds packed tight into shoulder to shoulder groups made for difficult IDs. In among the hordes off of Arkabutla Dam Road, were 9 first cycle, 2- 2nd cycle and 3 adult Herring Gulls plus 3 Bonaparte's. There was one bird, a 2nd year that had distinct possibilities for a California but the birds flushed and the was lost when they settled back to the levee. Finally the waiting was rewarded as the first winter Thayer's dropped in and took a bath before settling in the flock. The next cold front should push some of the more interesting gulls down this way...looking for Iceland or something even better. Off of Hambrick Road, just south of the dump, 7 Western Meadowlarks and 2 small flocks of Laplands off of Counce Road. Sandhill Cranes were located feeding in small groups off Buck Island and again off Highway 3 to the east, total 32 birds. I went by Robco and found large numbers of Lesser Scaup with 100+ Canvasbacks among the ones and twos of other species scattered through the large blocks of sleeping ducks. A single White Pelican and a dozen DC Cormorant were all I could pick out in the afternoon glare (it is better to bird this lake either very early, very late or when very cloudy) At TVA Lake there were only 61 ducks on the lake and ALL were Greater Scaup. Since the construction on TVA Lake the Lesser Scaup seem to have gone to Robco. Four Pied-billed Grebes, and a few Coots rounded out the afternoon list. Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
