TN-birders,

Our TOS winter birding meeting will be the weekend of February 7-9 at Pickwick
State Park, south of Savannah, TN. I talked to a lady there today and they are
honoring the “winter special” rate of $59/night. She also said that breakfast
begins at 7 am. You can always order off the menu for breakfast, but if they
have enough people staying that weekend (TOS or otherwise) they will also offer
a breakfast buffet. We do NOT have a block of rooms reserved, as she told me
they are not anywhere near full that weekend. There is also a Hampton Inn very
close by that some folks are staying at. Here is that information: Hampton Inn,
Counce, 1.3 miles from state park lodge $89 double/$99 king. 6:00-10:00 a.m.
free hot breakfast. I do not have the phone number for this one.

The agenda for this mostly non-TOS business weekend (“Let’s go birding”, as
Wallace Coffee always says) looks like this (so far):

Friday night: looks like a good opportunity to bring a few bottles of wine and
maybe some nibbles (as our Aussie friends call them) and catch up with friends
from all over the state. Not sure where this will be but it will be in the main
Pickwick Lodge building somewhere. Just follow the sounds of laughter and
birding boasts! Dollyann and I will bring some cups for drinking whatever and
some cheese and napkins. Other volunteer snacks would be appreciated. Whatever
is left over we’ll polish off Saturday night!

Saturday - Meet in front of the Pickwick Lodge at 8:15 Saturday and Sunday for
field trip. We probably will only have one group going out birding unless lots
of folks show up, then we might have to split into 2 groups. Carpooling will be
important. We’ll probably bird the trees in front of the lodge for a while
before moving on to other areas. These trees held a western warbler
(Townsend’s, I think) on a trip there many years ago. We will bird around the
Dam itself for gulls (Thayer’s always a possibility at this time of year).
There are farm fields and lots of open water around for numerous other
wintering species.

I will be checking with the our resident birding specialist in the area, Damien
Simbeck (hope he can make it). He will know all the sweet spots in the area,
but he has a sore back at the moment. We will plan to bird all day Saturday and
until noon on Sunday. Saturday night after dinner, we will have a short
informal discussion about a few TOS related topics. Everyone is invited. This
will be held somewhere in the Pickwick lodge main building. The lady there said
it shouldn’t be a problem finding an area where we can meet, but their main
board room is already occupied for the night.

Following is some information from the TN State Parks Div.:
Thank you for choosing the Tn State Parks for your up-coming bird watching
weekend at Pickwick Landing State Park.
Your group will enjoy Pickwick State Park’s inn which offers an indoor pool and
an outdoor pool exclusively for the cabin and inn guests. The park inn has 119
rooms each with a picturesque view of the lake. The inn has a gift shop,
restaurant, laundry facilities, meeting rooms, exercise rooms, outdoor and
indoor pools and tennis courts. Located near the inn are cabins featured with
central heat and air, cable TV, full kitchen, a patio and fireplace. Guests in
the cabins enjoy all inn privileges including use of the tennis courts and
swimming pool. Each cabin accommodates eight people and may be booked up to a
year in advance. The park also offers 48 beautiful wooded campsites, each
equipped with a table, a grill and electrical and water hook-up. Two of the
sites are handicap accessible. A primitive campground and picnic area is
located on the north side of Pickwick Lake and has 43 sites with some located
on the lake.

If I can assist further with more birding opportunities at Pickwick Landing and
Paris Landing in the future please don't hesitate to give me a call.
