I want to thank the Highland Rim Chapter for hosting the 2006 TOS Winter Meeting in Manchester this weekend. Approximately 50 TOS members attended this well organized event. Members came from as far away as Memphis and Bristol. Highland Rim members provided opportunities for interesting birds and offered hospitality including quite a spread of food and two informative speakers. Special recognition for Ruth Luckadoo, long time Highland Rim member, and Lisa Trail, Chapter President, along with the other Highland Rim Chapter officers and members who led field trips and provided such hospitality. Charlie Muise spoke about the progress of the Bird Monitoring Plan (which had been the topic of a working Partners In Flight (PIF) meeting on Friday) and John Lamb updated us on the bird and land management projects at the AEDC. Bird highlights of the weekend included a very cooperative Black-throated Sparrow and a Cackling Goose. While no formal business is conducted at a Winter Meeting, we did have a well-attended planning session in which members provided suggestions and developed ways of implementing or improving club services on topics ranging from: the TOS website, ideas to encourage a broader range of membership, discussion of future access to the digitized Migrant (which is soon to be available) and other topics. The teamwork and honest exchange of ideas are appreciated. Thanks to all of the TOS members who work hard to make this organization function.
