. TOS SHADY VALLEY FORAY June 10, 11 and 12, 2011

Information on participation, schedule, and reporting results

1.. There is no registration or paperwork required to participate in the
foray, but if you plan to come and participate, let Rick Knight know which days
you plan to participate and when you plan to arrive to begin birding.
. 2. If you know the area and know when and where you would like to bird,
let Rick know as soon as convenient.

3. If you are not familiar with the area, let Rick know when you plan to
come and one of us will help you get an area to bird. We will have maps of
Shady Valley showing the areas where one might bird, and will help you get
together with other birders to work an area if you prefer.

4. There are several types of habitat that can be birded, such as bogs,
woodland, and fields. These can be found on Nature Conservancy tracts,
National Forest (including access to the Appalachian Trail), rural roadsides,
and private farms (where access has been arranged). Elevations range from
~2800 ft. in the valley floor to over 4000 ft. on the surrounding ridges.

5. Rick and Roy Knispel will be there by 8:00 a.m. Friday (earlier if any
of you plan to come earlier on Friday) and help get parties organized.

6. On Friday and Saturday evenings, Rick plans to tent at Orchard Bog
(weather permitting) so he will already be there on Saturday and Sunday
mornings. Roy will get there by 7 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday to help get
parties organized.

7. Depending on how many people plan to come and when they will be there,
we are likely to have brief get-togethers on Friday and Saturday evenings,
possibly with groups going to nearby eating spots for dinner.

8. Each party should report species and numbers at each location where
they birded. Rick will have field cards available for your use. For each
location, drop off your card at a box designated for this purpose at the stone
house headquarters at Orchard Bog.
