Another distinguishing characteristic between two is the distance for the
tip of the bill to the front edge of the nostril. 50 or more mm in
Trumpeter and less than 50 in Tundra.
If you ever find a carcass, the most distinguishing feature between two
species is that the trachea tube of the trumpeter is routed behind the
sternum but in front of the sternum on a tundra swan.

The swans this morning were at least 1/4 mile away across the lake/river,
and about 100 yds or more from the adults. Most photos I got are with
their heads tucked or underwater, but nothing obviously suggests that they
are different birds than the ones in Eric's photos (other than there are
also 5 adult Mute Swans now).
I'll try to make it back out there this afternoon, but for now it appears
(to me) 4 immature Tundra and 5 adult Mute (which I don't believe are
locals).

4 first year what? They are clearly keeping to themselves most the
time. They do appear slightly smaller but not 10 inches smaller. They have
very deep pointed foreheads similar to trumpeter and mute. Their tails are
clearly not long like the adult mutes. Eyes are pretty offset like mute
and tundra. Head meeting upper bill profile very smooth and straight more
like a trumpeter.
At this point I have to go with Mute Swans on the 4 younger birds but
I?ll be interested when some experts weigh in.
