The last page of this brochure by the Trumpeter Swan Society has a little
identification information about juveniles. It says that Tundra swans will
begin to turn white by late Dec and be almost all white by March while
Trumpeter swans will still be dark gray.

Sibley has a more detailed (than the guide) analysis online. He makes the same
statement under his “plumage” section and mentions white on the rump of Tundras
in his “flight” section.

Hopefully this helps.

Forgot to mention, also note that the amount of pink on bill varies among
the four birds in Eric's photos. Folks have mentioned the deep V in
feathering looking head-on at the birds. This can be difficult to judge,
but notably, this is less reliable field mark for immatures with immature
Tundra having less u-shaped head pattern than adults as I recall.

In Eric's photos of the immatures, the eye is distinct from the bill and
the feathering here is rounded, not straight. So Tundra, not Trumpeter
(and definitely not Mute). Also not as dark gray overall as I would
expect for Trumpeter this time of year. Amount of pink on bill is
perfectly fine for immature Tundra.
The swans this morning were at least 1/4 mile away across the lake/river,
and about 100 yds or more from the adults. Most photos I got are with
their heads tucked or underwater, but nothing obviously suggests that they
are different birds than the ones in Eric's photos (other than there are
also 5 adult Mute Swans now).
I'll try to make it back out there this afternoon, but for now it appears
(to me) 4 immature Tundra and 5 adult Mute (which I don't believe are
locals).

The pinkish bills with blacker base tends to lean toward Trumpeter Swans?
Has anyone seen their feet?

If those are Mute Swans, I give up.

It shouldn?t be this hard. 5 adult mute swans. No question there.
4 first year what? They are clearly keeping to themselves most the
very deep pointed foreheads similar to trumpeter and mute. Their tails are
clearly not long like the adult mutes. Eyes are pretty offset like mute
and tundra. Head meeting upper bill profile very smooth and straight more
like a trumpeter.
I?ll be interested when some experts weigh in.
At this point I have to go with Mute Swans on the 4 younger birds but
