For the Swallow-tailed Kite fans headed this way Saturday or Sunday. I am two miles from the Bristol NASCAR race. It is already horrendous with the Food City 250 race to begin within minutes (8 p.m.Eastern). That has a good many of the 160,000 projected fans already somewhat into the area. Unknown thousands more will be coming Saturday for the big night race (Sharpie 500) which beings Saturdy at 8 p.m.Eastern. Useful information for kite fans: 1. Take the Greeneville, TN exit of I-81 and proceed north on U.S. 11-E until you come to Tn Route 107 at Tusculum, just on the northeast side of Greeneville. Turn right on 107 and that is the highway the Swallow-tailed Kite is on. You will drive up a scenic route into Washington Co. to the kite. 2. If you are flowing north before noon or shortly afterwards there should be no problem whatsoever with race traffic. The worst of the traffic is closer to Bristol (about 60 miles north) at mid to early afternoon because the race begins at 8 p.m. 3. As long as you are out of the region by dark, you will be heading back south long before the exit traffic begins. No sweat with this at all. 4. Motel rooms are scare to not available for a hundred miles out or more while the race fans are here. 5. If you are headed north to see the Swallow-tailed Kite on Sunday you will be flowing north bound while the race traffic and campers, etc. flowing south bound and that should be no problem at all. If you return south bound back home you will have less and less traffic by mid-afternoon. I should think it would still be easily tolerable to flow south at noon. 6. Make no bones about it. The race traffic influence will not be transparent. I suspect you will be able to see the flow beginning from near Chattanooga and across the Cumberlands on I-40. It will pick up through malfunction junction in Knoxville and you will know you are with the NASCAR crowd on Saturday as you are heading north on I-81. Don't be intimidated at all. You are in great shape. If you think this is a traffic exaggeration, just drive up to Lexington KY and take a look at the "Welcome Race Fans" signs or go to West Virginia and take it in. Remember, all the 160,000 fans do not drive up from Knoxville. They come from all roads and all points on the compass. And thousands upon thousands have been here since last weekend. Let's go birding.....
