May 15, 2009 Greene County: Greeneville; Hurricane Gap Road; Bald Mountain (along Viking Mountain Road); Greene Mountain Road I spent the latter part of this afternoon searching for Swainson's Warbler, which appears to be annual in Greene County but very localized and hard to find. After checking about four miles along Hurricane Gap Road and finding none, I visited an area on upper Paint Creek along Viking Mountain Road where the species has been found fairly often over the last decade. Eventually I found one male singing in a deep rhododendron tangle along the creek. Other species observed today include: Wild Turkey (4) Spotted Sandpiper (along upper Paint Creek, at moderately high elevation) Yellow-billed Cuckoo (Greeneville) Eastern Wood-Pewee (2) Acadian Flycatcher (3) Great Crested Flycatcher (2) Eastern Kingbird (4) White-eyed Vireo Blue-headed Vireo (3) Red-eyed Vireo (16) Red-breasted Nuthatch (on Hurricane Gap Road about 3 miles from Paint Creek Campground, a mid-elevation site) Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (4) Swainson's Thrush (Greeneville) Gray Catbird (4) Northern Parula (2) Black-throated Green Warbler (7) Blackpoll Warbler (Greeneville) Black-and-white Warbler (2) American Redstart (3, Greeneville) Worm-eating Warbler (on Hurricane Gap Road) Ovenbird (3) Hooded Warbler (16) Scarlet Tanager (6) Indigo Bunting (34) Don Miller Greeneville, Greene Co., TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
