July 9-10, 2011 West TN The table is set, the Mississippi is slowly falling but still over 20 feet in TN. Large pools of slowly receding water is perfect for the coming shorebirds but Ol' Sol is doing his best to eliminate the resource with 100 degree days. At Memphis on Saturday; 43 Least Sandpipers, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs and 1 Solitary Sandpiper. Lots of B-n Stilts and Killdeer with young and tending nests plus 27 B-b Whistlers. Not much found in Lauderdale Co, except house after house abandoned to the ravages of rushing high water. I took lots of sad photos of homes I've past hundreds of times waving to families but no more. Did not find much in the way of shorebirds except in Dyer and lake Counties but then it was work. Dyer Co; 2 Spotted, 4 Lesser Yellowlegs, 2 Greater Yellowlegs, 27 Least Sandpipers, 2 Stilt Sandpipers and 1 Pectoral with scattered Black-necked Stilts and young and lots of Killdeer. Lake Co; 54 Least Sandpipers, 4 Pectoral Sandpiper, 5 Lesser and 1 Greater Yellowlegs with Killdeer and Black-necked Stilts and young. Two male Shovelers still batching it at Mud Lake. Criswell had immature White Ibis earlier in the week flying near Moss Island but just regular waders along my way this weekend. NO TERNS of any kind on Reelfoot Lake. Good Birding!! Jeff R.
