Stones River Greenway, south from Cason Trailhead
Rutherford County
3/24/12

I think I've found a new hotspot for birds in the Murfreesboro area. I had
never birded here before and was quite surprised at what I was able to find.
Attached is my eBird list with notes. In addition to what's listed below, I
also saw a pair of unidentified swallows winging their way south (oddly
enough), but they were moving too fast and were nothing but silhouettes against
the gray sky. Probably Rough-wings...

Mallard  3     The two males alternated their attention between trying to
copulate with the female and trying to kill each other. At one point during an
especially violent mating attempt, all three birds were simultaneously
completely underwater.

Turkey Vulture  2
Red-tailed Hawk  1
Red-bellied Woodpecker  1
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker  2

American Robin  2
Northern Mockingbird  1
Brown Thrasher  1
Cedar Waxwing  11
Yellow-rumped Warbler  35     A very conservative estimate. There could easily
have been 50+. Groups of 5-8 of them kept flying back and forth across the
path, and the trees on both sides of the path were full of them for a length of
about 100 feet.
Field Sparrow  3
Song Sparrow  1
White-throated Sparrow  2
Northern Cardinal  6
Red-winged Blackbird  5
Brown-headed Cowbird  2
American Goldfinch  10
