Standifer Gap Marsh, Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN, June 16, 2004
Least Bittern: One feeding edge of cattails south end of marsh. One singing
near beaver dam. We can usually hear it there 8 - 10 AM and about 8 PM, soft
"coo coo coo coo". Stand looking over South the open water near the
turn-around on the gravel road.

Blue-winged Teal: One female flying along east side. We would be interested
in any information regarding Blue-winged Teal at the marsh this summer,
especially any young.

Willow Flycatcher: 1st egg June 9, adult incubating June 16, estimated
hatching date June 26 - 28, estimated fledging date July 9 - 13, estimated
feeding fledged young about another 10 days. Probably 3-4 eggs.

Estimated weight of Willow Flycatcher: 13.5 g, estimated weight of egg 1.8 g,
( equivalent to 140 lb woman giving birth to an 18 lb baby, every day for 3 - 4
days! )

KING RAIL: 1 female with Bobwhite-size jet black downy young. Unfortunately
We were in Florida for this one, and the Limkin, Swallow-tailed Kites and
Tri-colored Herons.

David and Gloria Patterson
