Standifer Gap Marsh, Chattanooga, Hamilton County
May 30, 2006
Least Bittern: 17 nests: 2 fledged, 7 with 28 eggs,
4 abandoned, 2 can't relocate, 1 apparent loss to predator,
1 new super nest 24" high (usual max 16") canopy 36" high (usual max 24" )
with 3 or more times the usual canopy material, excellent shade

Great Blue Heron: 2 immatures and 1 adult, not together
Green Heron: usual 2-3

Wood Duck: 12
Mallard: 3 families

Northern Bobwhite: Rare at marsh last 2-3 years. Yesterday 1 young bob flew
from east of ditch along gravel road nearly to oil line marker, landed and made
a few sounds and 3+ others answered (none the full "bob white" song). Today
heard notes twice

Virginia Rail: 3, can't find any more nests

Willow Flycatcher: obvious territory singing, bounding about 1-2 acres
Eastern Kingbird: adults still zealously guarding empty nest
     which was complete 5/21

Tree Swallow: at least one nest in dead trees near beaver lodge

Wood Thrush: heard in at least 2 locations in trees on west side

Orchard Oriole: 5th nest with adults feeding, 2 have yellow males
this is just on the north end; I believe there are others on the east
   and south sides

Nest Mirror: made a nest viewer of 4 5' pieces of 1/2" thinwall conduit and a
small mirror with handle; kinda wobbly at 25' but beats climbing.
