Standifer Gap Marsh, Chattanooga, Hamilton County
November 10, 2004
Ruddy Duck
Ring-necked Duck, 7, including an extremely large and bright male
Coot, 30+
Virginia Rail
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
Marsh Wren
Golden-crowned Kinglet 2
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Thrush *
Common Yellowthroat
Fox Sparrow
Vesper Sparrow 5+
White-crowned Sparrow, 1 female or juvenile
Purple Finch 2 female or juvenile

* Two thrushes, together. Unusual location, perched high in an isolated willow
200 ft from shady woods. Unusual behavior; one in constant motion with wings
flapping; both moving around close together; looked somewhat like courtship or
food begging. I couldn't see well enough to be certain of identity, never saw
upper surface of tail, no hint of rufous, but from appearance could certainly
have been Hermits. They soon flew 200 feet to another high tree, and I lost
contact. It seems the date would make anything but Hermit unlikely, but the
behavior was certainly not like anything I have seen in a Hermit. I would
appreciate suggestions.
