8 March 2003

Wal-Mart Distribution Center;
Lick Creek Bottoms WMA unit at Skinner Crossroads (intersection of Hwy.
348, N. Mohawk Rd., and S. Mohawk Rd.);
Joachime Bible Refuge unit of Lick Creek Bottoms WMA (along S. Mohawk
Rd. just north of Murray Bridge Rd.);
elsewhere in western Greene County, with one stop in Greeneville

Good birding this afternoon and evening, as follows:

Mallard (111);
American Black Duck (7 JBR);
Gadwall (33);
American Wigeon (5 JBR);
Northern Pintail (16--8 JBR, 8 LCBWMA at Skinner Crossroads);
Northern Shoveler (6 WMDC);
Blue-winged Teal (WMDC);
Northern Harrier (WMDC);
Greater Yellowlegs (5 on Sapp Rd.) (my earliest date for this species in
Greene Co. by 10 days);
Pectoral Sandpiper (on Sapp Rd.) (my earliest date for this species in
Greene Co. by 3 days);
American Woodcock (2 behind Italian Village Restaurant on N. Rufe Taylor
Rd. in Greeneville);
Red-headed Woodpecker (on Green Rd. 0.2 mi. from Hwy. 348);
Tree Swallow (87+ on Hwy. 340 and Sapp Rd.);
Marsh Wren (WMDC, third pond) (also observed here in January and
February; apparently at least one bird overwintered);
American Pipit (on Sapp Rd.).

Drafting this message reminds me that I forgot to post the three male
Canvasbacks that were present on a pond in suburban Greeneville on March
1 and 2. (Thanks to Ben Britton of Morristown, TN for calling them to
my attention last Saturday.)

I also found my first butterfly of the year today--an Orange Sulphur at
WMDC.

Don Miller,
Greeneville, TN
