Took some visiting birders from the Bahamas out to the pits in the afternoon
and as usual in spring migration, the mix had noticeably changed from the
previous afternoon. The numbers had soared upward but diversity had fallen by
2
species with only 12 found. Hundreds of Lesser Yellowlegs had dropped in and
were still falling in as we watched. Five Semipalmated Plovers had replaced
the single and they also just fell in from nowhere. Solitary Sandpiper
numbers had doubled and they were spread everywhere and hardly could warrant
the
word solitary as the jostled for feeding territories. All the regular species
numbers had increased as a south wind pushed clouds and birds northward.

The Golden-Plovers and Baird's could not be found but I could concentrate on
just finding them in a remote area when so many birds were new. Still a
Single Semipalmated Sandpiper among the growing numbers of Least Sandpipers and

no Western Sandpiper which is the word I'm getting from here around the
mid-south. There were 4 Stilt Sandpipers with one on the verge of all their
summer
finery while the other 3 were plain Janes. The Long-billed Dowitchers are
still pumping and their numbers in Ark have risen to 3,000 at one location.

The numbers will ebb and flow and will never hold at any level for long
because these birds have sex on their minds and home is in the tundra far to
the
north.
Good Birding!!!
