Once again, Nolan and I spent the past two evenings at our house counting Common Nighthawks - with interesting results. A couple days ago (9-3-14) we counted 452 heading South between 5:30 and 7:45 PM. Yesterday (9-4-14) I counted 281, although Nolan was out longer and totaled numbers in the lower 400's (let's just pray his math is correct...he is younger!) Quite surprisingly, about 90% of those birds were heading North, and there were even two very large kettles of nighthawks as well. They were also observed around the same time frame as the previous day. This evening I counted alone and tallied 273 Common Nighthawks - all South-bound. Again, the first few seem to appear around 5:30 and the last bird passes at around 7:45 PM. Hopefully we'll be able to get out and count them again tomorrow. Good birding! My brother Nolan and I counted 452 Common Nighthawks from our house in 1 hour 35 minutes. All were heading South. Nolan said he saw 100+ at our sister's softball practice earlier as well. Also of note: we both repeatedly heard at least two Green Herons. They were obviously circling around because we kept hearing one at a different spot about every three seconds!
