TN-Birders: Seven of us went to Pendleton Co. Ky Saturday (3/23) and enjoyed the excitement of the Snowy Owl which has been there for a little over a month. We used a GPS unit (geographical positioning system) to navigate nearly 300 miles in five hours and hit it right on the money. We picked the owl up within the first three or four minutes. It was perched atop a house in an open field. We had grand views of the bird for nearly and hour and got photos. Kathy Caminiti, of Burlington, KY, provided the coordinates for our GPS unit. We also used the GPS unit to determine the distance to and location of each major route, exit and turns. Amazing accuracy! Kathy was waiting there when we pulled in. She said the bird was captured and banded by two fellows from Ohio, It was taken in a special net used for trapping raptors. It was aged as a bird in its second calendar year of life. Several photos were made of it while in captivity. Someone had been collecting owl pellets near several favorite perches to determine what it has been eating. Including lunch with Jane Wilson of Knoxville (met in the field), the Bristol party round trip took 12 hours. Our group included Bert Hale, Loraine Hale, Ken Hale, Meredith Hale, Carolyn Coffey, Bob Quillen and myself.
