Thanks to Daniel for guiding us on our successful Longspur quest today, a world lifer for two of us and one of the very few remaining lifer possibilities I had within Tennessee's borders (Sprague's Pipit, anyone???). I also just discovered an interesting tidbit -- the Smith's Longspur is one of the few known polygynandrous birds (mating groups of multiple males and females, parental care provided by multiple males to one nest).

=================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER=====================12/23/2013 8:20-10:30am Fort Campbell Montgomery CtyThree Smith's Longspurs were heard and/or seen this morning in the same spot they were observed on December 17th. Bill Pulliam, Rick Shipkowski, and Ruben Stoll came out this morning hoping to see the birds and were rewarded with good looks through binocs and scope on this cold, windy day. We had at least one male as the bird in the scope view had a well defined white patch on the upper wing coverts. We also heard their rattle calls overhead and when they flushed from the ground. Hopefully these birds will hang around through the rest of the winter.Daniel Moss Pleasant View, TN
