05-15-2013 Sunny It was an extremely slow day of birding and I think yesterday's trip to Memphis wore my sister out, so we ended the day early. Murfreesboro Wetlands Rutherford County First thing in the morning, we watched a raccoon play for about 20 minutes. We saw blackpoll, yellow-rumped, orchard oriole, and the other typical birds. We found a robin's nest and photographed her with babe. Terry Witt provided the highlight of the day by showing us a Least Flycatcher. Thank you, Terry. Stones River Battlefield Rutherford County Summer Tanager Indigo Buntings I could have birded more here and wanted to go to Shelby Bottoms, but my sister was bent on photographing a Black Vulture which are not prevelant in Kansas where she lives. So, I took her to Eagleville Rutherford County Normally, there are many Black Vultures to be seen along the hwy or feasting on roadkill, but surprisingly there weren't any. It upset her so much I just wanted to shoot a cow and make her happy. However, her spirits lifted when she photo-captured a Loggerhead Shrike at the corner of Shoemaker and Swamp. Her reaction was quite amusing to me since she had found and photo-captured the Northern Shrike which is a rare find in Kansas. Her photo was posted net-wide and birders all over the state of KS flocked to Squaw Creek to see the bird. She did love the place and took some scenic shots and now knows 'why' this place is a birding jewel. Cason Lane Greenway Rutherford County Not much here. The only thing I found interesting was the otter playing in the water. Nice photo opportunity. Windrow Road Rutherford County Still flooded cow pond had two Great Egrets and a Green Heron. Very interesting and unusual to this specific area. Marnie Mitchell Rutherford County
