Location: Wolf River Environmental Restoration Greenway Trail System Observation date: 12/5/09 Notes: Allan Sparks and I visited the western end of the 2200 acre trail system this morning. 4 hrs walk and 4 miles approx. Bright cloudless day, temp last night down to 28 deg F. Thin sliver of ice on all water, heavy frost This morning. Lots of birds out in the hedgerows and along the ditches small creeks, and sloughs. Sparrows were abundant everywhere. At the main intersection of trails were an abundance of Am Goldfinches feeding on seeds along the trail and in the side depression. Further on saw more finches feeding and bathing near the slough within a mixed flock of sparrows and Yel Butt Warblers. This is where we saw the Purple Finches. Towhees were spread out along the hedgerows during the hike. Three were seen near the parking area and old farm house that had a lot of messy hedgerow material and vines around it. 6 deer seen, best buck was a small 4 pt.
